This book seeks to explain why the military intervenes in Pakistans politics. It
is maintained, theoretically and empirically, that the military has intervened
in Pakistans politics for its own political interests: The military
instrumentalizes its political power to maximize its economic interests as an
independent actor. Contrary to existing structuralist, legitimist,
path-dependent work on Pakistans politics and the state, this publication posits
that it is the military agency, not the societal structure/culture, which causes
a coup detat or military intervention. These conclusions are derived from both
qualitative and quantitative investigations of Pakistan.
